Bring your own keys. Pay no middleman.
Byte Poet holds no provider credentials of its own — not in an environment variable, not in the proxy, not anywhere. You add your keys once, they are encrypted per user, and every agent uses them. Whatever a turn costs, it costs at the provider's price, billed by the provider, to you.

You pay your model providers directly.
The way Byte Poet works today. Add a key per provider in Settings and every agent can use it.
- Every agent, every capability, no feature gates
- Claude, Gemini, OpenAI, OpenRouter and local models
- Keys stored encrypted per user, never in an env var
- No markup, no token resale, no minimum
- Local models via Ollama cost nothing at all
- Per-user usage and cost accounting built in

How BYOK actually works here
In the Models screen, once per provider. It is encrypted with a dedicated cipher before it is written, and only ever shown back to you masked.
For frontier models the shared proxy is keyless: your decrypted key is attached to the individual request and forwarded. Nothing about it is persisted on the proxy.
OpenRouter models skip the proxy entirely and are called straight from your key, so there is no extra hop between you and the provider.
Tokens and cost are recorded per user on every exit path — successful answers, errors, and runs that hit a limit alike.
Questions people actually ask
Do you store my API keys?
Yes — encrypted, per user, with a cipher dedicated to keys, and never in plaintext. They are shown back to you masked and can be replaced or removed at any time. Byte Poet has no provider keys of its own: if you remove yours, nothing can call that provider on your behalf.
Do you take a cut of my model spend?
No. Your key calls the provider and the provider bills you. There is no markup, no token resale and no minimum spend, because the tokens never pass through our account.
What happens if I pick a model I have no key for?
The run fails immediately with a message telling you which provider key to add, instead of a confusing authentication error from somewhere downstream.
Can I use local models instead?
Yes. Any Ollama-compatible endpoint works. Local turns never leave your machine and cost nothing; small models automatically get a conservative capability profile so the tool loop still behaves.
What will the all-in plans cost?
We have not set prices yet — the plans land after the beta. BYOK will keep working exactly as it does now once they do.
Is anything free right now?
The platform itself is free during the private beta. You only pay your model providers for what your agents actually spend.
